Literacy With An Attitude - Discussion Questons

In his preface, Patrick Finn states, "The status quo is the status quo because people who have the power to make changes are comfortable with the way things are." Do you agree with this statement, why or why not?

Finn also discusses in his preface the two kinds of education in the United States; "empowering education" and "domesticating education" ; have you observed or experienced this gap and why do you think it exists?

Hi everyone. Hope your having a great summer so far. I just wanted to get a head start on this book so I thought I would go ahead and post my comments for the discussion questions.

I see the reasoning behind Finn's comment about "the status quo" but, I don't agree with it. There are many people who have the power to make changes, but are afraid to initiate the change making. Change is scary! This could be due to the pressures of society or their own insecurity. Once they "step up" and do their part then there will be a new "status quo". The status quo is what we settle for. The status quo should be constantly changing.

Empowering Education and Domesticating Education do exist. I don't feel that in our school system we have this gap, but I do believe that it exists between different school systems. Part of the reason it exists is because of our preconceived ideas of what children can do.
